Program Overview:
Students at the Glastonbury-East Hartford Elementary Magnet School (GEMS) explore science, global studies, and technology through daily, hands-on immersion experiences. The school provides a challenging environment that encourages both academic achievement and a love of learning. As a NASA Explorer School, students participate in a variety of video conferences and learning sessions with astronauts, rocket scientists, and engineers from NASA and industry partners. Students collaborate with CREC partner schools (Two Rivers Magnet Middle School and Greater Hartford Academy of Mathematics and Science) to make connections across the K-12 spectrum. Taking advantage of young children’s exceptional language learning ability, children are taught Japanese language and customs, encouraging them to be sensitive, effective, thoughtful communicators. The school’s inquiry-based model encourages students to experiment and pursue areas of interest in global studies, technology, and science. Students learn about the world and how to incorporate what they learn into their everyday lives. Based on the 2010-11 enrollment data, the school meets the state integration standard.
